Hi

I am new to OSM so please forgive me if this is a dumb question. I have been adding a few buildings but I then realised that there is probably also some sort of large scale automatic building detection going on. So my question is: Is manually adding buildings not really necessary any longer? Will all buildings sooner or later be added to the map automatically?

Thanks, Mikkel

As far as I know, there is no automatic building import on a global level.

In some places, e.g. France, there are building imports from official sources (cadastre), but in other regions, e.g. Sweden, there are no such efforts underway.

Sooner or later, there will probably be an AI that just grabs buildings and everything else off aerial imagery, but I would not hold my breath waiting. :)

OpenStreetMap's strength is its community of human beings dedicated to improve the map, not algorithms that analyse aerial imagery. Algorithms can occasionally help the human mapper but they cannot replace him or her.
