I've just downloaded an app on my iPhone which uses OpenStreetMap data, and unfortunately it doesn't seem to contain hotels that I'll be staying in. The hotel also doesn't appear on this website, presumably it's the same version as I only downloaded the map a few hours ago.

Can I add the hotels to the maps? Their location is available on Google Maps so hopefully that information can be used in adding the hotel here.

The first hotel is in Tokyo, Japan. I can provide details if necessary.

For hotels use the tourism=hotel tag. You can also provide additional information about the hotel as described on the wiki page and provide an address. You are NOT allowed to copy the position from Google Maps, but since you had been at the hotel you can easily estimate the position if you don't have any GPS device.

In addition to what scai says there is good bing in tokyo (a back ground you can select in most editors) so you can trace features assuming you know the area well enough to identify them in the Ariel image.this is allowed copying from other maps is not.Note tracing from Bing is ok NOT other maps or Ariel photo stuff that we do not have permission to copy from. please read this http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Copyright

You absolutely must NOT use another map to locate the exact building, if you do not know where it is already and/or cannot confirm its exact location from other sources (e.g. aerial imagery correlated to photos of the hotel, or actually having been there and seen it)

Google maps very frequently has the wrong building identified as the location of a business.

For locations that you know approximately where they are but only from copyright source, you can always use a named Waypoint (or whatever your app calls it) on your device, the same as you might have one for your own home to navigate to.

Once you've been there and confirmed the location, you can add as many details that are publicly visible as you like... even down to the exact location(s) on the building outline where there are entrances.

The iphone app I bought (CityMaps2Go) doesn't support anything like waypoints or pins which is quite disappointing. Google maps is fine when you look up a place, then switch to street view and e.g. see the name of the hotel on the hotel, exactly where they say it is.

According to the support page at http://ulmon.com/support for CityMaps2Go:

How do I drop a custom pin on the map?

Hold down your finger on the map for 2 seconds. A pin which you can rename and move around will appear.

Hope this helps.

If you're going to add a tourism=hotel, you should consider how does one contact the hotel so I generally tag

website=
phone=
contact:fax=
email=

There is an ongoing discussion in the wiki whether we should map phone numbers at all.

other useful tags for hotels are stars rooms beds

famous hotels might also be in WP (key 'wikipedia' in OSM) and like for any other feature you can add addr:housenumber, addr:street, addr:city

have a look at the wiki for more information.

I have added the hotel onto the map, however it's not appearing in view mode. Have I done something wrong or do I have to wait for someone to approve the changes?

Thanks.

Please use the "add new comment" function instead of creating an "answer" to your initial question.

Sometimes you have to wait a little bit for changes to appear on the map, especially on the weekend.

Sorry about that, thanks for the info!

Thanks for your quick response. Unfortunately I have not yet been to the hotel so another mapping service is all I can use to add the hotel. If I could get an alternative iphone offline map app that is better maintained, I would, however all the iphone apps seem to use openstreetmap. So my only choice is to look for the hotels on here and add them manually. I have never used this before and I'm not sure how to add a hotel onto a map.

"Unfortunately I have not yet been to the hotel so another mapping service is all I can use to add the hotel." --- In this case you cannot enter the hotel in OSM at this time (exceptions would be the ones stated above in other replies that you can identify the hotel in aerial imagery).
