When I go to a location on the map, I like to see the businesses in that location automatically, without having to search for them by name.

Can you give an example of a location on the map that shows the problem? Just paste the contents of the URL bar here.

Well, this url shows my current location: https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=15/35.9070/-81.0790 and the map displayed doesn't show any business establishments.

Ok, I added a POI here: https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=19/35.90144/-81.09138 but it only shows up at the highest zoom level. How can I make it appear at the default zoom level?

Tile rendering just hasn't caught up yet I think. I'd expect restaurants to appear from zoom level 17 (that's the "#map=" number), like here in Statesville:

https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=17/35.78579/-80.88763

To render POIs at lower zoom levels you'd need to use a different map, or create your own map. As an example, OSM's cycle map (it's available from the layer switcher at the right-hand side of the screen) shows some POIs from earlier zoom levels, as you can see here.

The reason why https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=15/35.9070/-81.0790 doesn't show any businesses is that no-one has added them to OpenStreetMap yet. As the about page says "Contributors use aerial imagery, GPS devices, and low-tech field maps to verify that OSM is accurate and up to date". Statesville has a few, but you'll need to zoom a bit in to see them.

If you'd like to add data that's missing, have a read of this page. If you know from personal experience where businesses are located there, you can just add them - that's what the "edit" button at the top of the screen is for.

Ok, I'll try adding a POI, thanks.
