I'm new here. How do I edit the cycle map layer only?

(note: first attempt at posting a question got rejected do to non validated email) You would think validating an email for Open Street Map would give access to the forum?

How do I edit the cycle map layer only?

You don't - all of the map layers at OpenStreetMap.org (and many others besides) are created from the same data. When you add something to OSM the "standard" layer will be updated almost immediately (at least when zoomed in) but some of the other layers may take a bit longer.

Well in edit mode I can't see the existing Cycle Map data.

Can you give an example of a map location where there's data in the cycle map that isn't in OSM?

Well I couldn't find the cycle data on OSM so I'm not sure what you mean. The cycle map shows and labels routes according to National, Regional or Local marked routes. The issue I am trying to fix is that SusTrans have adopted some local routes in Leeds so it is now both a local and national route. (NCN 677, NCN668)

Sustrans routes are held in things called relations. In the on-line editor there are three choices in the left-hand panel "All Fields", "All tags" and "All Relations". Collapse the first two, and now you have the ability to add, remove or edit relations. In order to add the two new routes you need to add these to each highway element which makes up the complete route. Normally you get a pick list of relations close to the editor viewport. You may need to create the relations. NOTE: please be aware that this is a fairly complex task for a new editor!

If you have Flash installed, you may want to use the older Potlatch 2 editor (rather than the default iD) which does a slightly better job of showing cycle route relations while you're editing. Use the dropdown arrow by 'Edit' to select this editor.

I'm not sure of the etiquette here for commenting on old issues, but I found UK National Cycle Network Route 254 displaying wrongly on the cycle map (which it still does as of this writing), but not present at all in the data when I tried went to edit it https://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/74898477

The cycle map only updates occasionally, but if you want to see the cycle route updates that you've made you should be able to see them at https://map.atownsend.org.uk/maps/map/map.html#zoom=14&lat=51.02493&lon=-1.986 (you might need to zoom in a bit to see them).

You can also see the relation in OSM as https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/138421#map=9/51.2353/-1.6740 .

Thanks. As it happens, the Wiltshire Cycleway and route 254 follow different routes around the bit I'm concerned about; the bit south of Quidhamptom to the West of Salisbury. It looks as though (part of) Wiltshire Cycleway has been wrongly annotated as network: ncn and ref: 254 rather than having a separate relation for the NCN route.

Aha - so you were correct to add the extra route at https://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/74898477 and we (well, you) just need to make sure they're tagging with the correct values.
