Greetings all,

Until recently there were two different versions of the map with North African countries labeled - one had the countries labelled in English and on the other the countries were listed in Arabic. Apparently the one that labelled the countries in English is no longer supported and I am wondering why this would be? Is there a place to access a layer where these country names are listed in English?

Thanks,

Amber

There are OSM maps in specific languages on Wikimedia Toolserver. eg a map in English, of North Africa.

See the full list of languages.

Also see the OSM wiki article on Map Internationalization.

In short, the main renderer is using Mapnik tool/map style and choose to render the text in the tag "name" which is by definition the official name in the local language. If the name in english is different (or a different character set), it is tagged into another tag like "name:en". Then it is a matter of the renderer to display the "name" or "name:en" text, depending on the destinated public.

The main OpenStreetMap website never had layers with different names. I suggest that you find out who provided those layers and talk to them.
