Since an embankment is not a wall and JOSM corrects barrier=yes, it makes me wondering. Should not there be an extra value for the barrier key ? It is just the opposite of the ditch which has a value in the barrier key ?

Embankments are either mapped as an additional property on an existing geometry (for example on a way with highway=xxxx) or by man_made=embankment on a way. See embankment on the wiki

Hi Simon, I noticed it using barrier, around an oil depot / silo's, to prevent spill. The barriers are walls of any kind, walls, embankments, dikes or alike. And yes I ve been using embankment with defensive lines for a while.

For info, when I was looking at rendering these I came up with this list of how people map embankments on highway and non-highway, non-railway ways. The most common is probably embankment=yes. I can't show you an example rendering of anywhere in the Netherlands, but an example in the UK is here - you can see an embankment with a footpath on it going to the east and the embankment with no footpath going north.
