Hello everyone.

In some countries tombs are an imposant structure of the landscape and have an important cultural or architectural value. Sometimes they are mapped as buildings by contributors who map via an imagery and don't have local knowledge, as they appear very similar to buildings on imageries. There is historic=tomb tag but tombs aren't always historical and mostly in a continuous use (common for the whole descendant and a place of rituals). So

  1. What is the proper way to tag a common tomb?
  2. Should they be tagged as buildings?

Thanks 😉

There is currently no really well established tagging, but building=tomb (for non-historic tombs) seems to be a good choice and already has a fair number of uses.

See https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/search?q=tomb#values

The value is currently undocumented and could do with a write up.

Thanks. I've never seen the building=tomb tag before though. I'm beginning to use it.

Hi, The picture looks like a mausoleum, I've used building=yes with tomb=mausoleum on features like this.

There is the tag cemetery=grave that is already used ~6k times. It is really a basic and quick method to tag a grave.

This is not part of a cemetery, it's a standalone tomb.

A grave is a hole dug in the ground where the ground is reinstated after burial, it is not a building.
