I've been looking at OpenStreetMap in my area and there's some stuff missing. What do I need to do to get started?

First of all the Wiki is an important resource (and available in many languages):

And of course you can ask here if you have any other questions.

All of the documentation I've found is very much about contributing new raw data, but there's not much of a beginners guide on using OSM /data/ that I've been able to find. Do I need to set up my own PostGIS and map server to be able to embed maps in my application? If so, what's the best way to set up a simple map server? If not, what are the resources for public map servers? What is the difference between the tile server formats (WMS? TMS? Probably other TLAs?) and which should I use and why?

I'd love to see some tutorials describing map servers, tiling, how projections work, etc.

The books available in German and English (soon) are resources that provide a lot of information in short time. I recommend reading it before reading many wiki pages.

RangerRick obviously this question is very much about contributing new raw data. I think your question could be a good one to ask (ask it as new question rather than a 'comment' here) although it's rather a broad. There are already some questions on here which you may find helpful, about rendering for example. We also have a wiki page 'Using OpenStreetMap'.

You should talk to Andy Allan ;) He can be a hard guy to get a hold of though; alternatively, consume the Beginner's Guide which is available in a lot of languages and will guide you in your first steps in OpenStreetMap. Any questions that you might still have we will gladly answer here!
