Hello,

I want to download street map from garminopensteetmap.nl into a memory card which I will put inside a little helmet camera I always take when I cycle. I don't have a Garmin GPS device. I used computer(Windows)and USB card reader to transfer the downloaded file into the memory card. I have downloaded and unzipped the file " osm generic gmapsupp.zip" but when I try to open it, there is nothing !! all I want is a picture of UK map to use in my camera. Do I need a Garmin camera in order to download and view the maps ? Are your maps compatible with Garmin device only ?

I appreciate your immediate attention to the matter.

With thanks

What make and model is the camera? Someone may be able to suggest another format that will work with it. OpenStreetMap is far more than just the Garmin maps.

It's also not clear what a helmet camera would do with map data. Does it double up as a head-mounted display that can show your current location ? Most action camera just record the lat/long coordinates (no need for map data) and if you want to for example geocode the location, this is done off-camera during post-processing.

The Garmin compatible maps available from garmin.openstreetmap.nl will only work on Garmin GPSes.

If you want to see OSM maps on your phone I recommend getting the OSMand app which is available for both iPhone and Android. The free app allows 5 downloads but if you buy the OSMand+ version, you can get one new download per month for any of several areas. OSMand also offers a subscription called OSM Live that allows one to get a new map every day, even every hour if you're so inclined. The Plus version, which I heartily recommend, costs about $5 USD and the OSM Live is approximately $1 USD per month. It's a tremendous bargain no matter how you look at it.

I use OSM Live and have automatic daily downloads set up for the areas in which I do my OSM mapping, including Alaska. Thailand, North Carolina and Oregon. I can usually see my edits appear on the new maps within hours of when I did them.

Hope this helps,

Dave

Take a look at https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Software/Mobile for a more extensive list of apps for the different types of mobile devices. Without knowing the brand of your camera, it is impossible to tell which app or data format you can use.

It is important to know whether your camera supports "maps", since you want the whole of the UK on your device. I assume a static map without too much detail is not what your are looking for. You probably want to pan, zoom in and out, perhaps even search for places. All of this has to be supported by the software (or firmware) in the camera. I wonder whether this is possible.

So I fear you will need an additional device to look at a map. AlaskaDave gave the example of OsmAnd on a smartphone. The list at the beginning of my answer gives you a lot of alternatives, e.g. maps.me, Oruxmap, LocusMap. Magic Earth, MapFactor Navigator.
