Firefox gives me page not found and Chrome keeps spinning. Fairly small area - about 20K square. I saw some comments said be sure to pick a format but I don't see how.

It depends on where the area is, of course, but 20km square round here is way bigger than I'd consider trying to export using the API.
Either should work fine. There are load limits which kick in for areas that are still fairly small.
