At the risk of starting an argument about tagging preferences, I wonder if I could ask for opinions about tagging buildings that sell services that are not typically "shops". Is there an easy way to remember which one is which? I find many mappers avoid the whole subject by tagging "building=yes" and then specifying the amenities, but I think describing the building type is more interesting than what happens inside.

I understand that an office park is commercial. But what about a business that sells plumbing services? A movie theater? An oil change center? My personal feeling is that any business that exclusively deals with registered businesses is commercial, whereas a business that is open to the public is retail. Is that about right? Or is that too broad? The wiki is not very clear.

I think you are correct with your B2B and B2C difference. Since the world is grey and not black&white, there will be many businesses that are not purely in 1 category. Feel free to chose the one that suits the situation best according to you. A later mapper can always discuss your choice.

The difference between the two is not clearly defined, and in fact a business that exclusively deals with registered businesses today could move and a consumer retail business take its place tomorrow.

A clear case of retail is buildings in a "shopping center". Another indicator would be buildings having a showroom or large display windows. But it's also not uncommon for a consumer retail store to operate out of a conventional building that could double as office space.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Makes me feel better knowing that I am not the only mapper having a tough time with it. I will consider all this new information.

Hi mtc, tag the building=yes and be specific for the different bussiness at the address nodes. Tag what is.

I can see how specifying at the address node would be better than specifying a type of building, especially for buildings with multiple postal addresses.
