I can select the side-road object that needs to be extended by about 50 feet, the outline flashes orange/red. I can select the end point so that the circle flashes around it. But when I try to drag it to join up with the main road, the whole map moves, not just the end point.

Am I doing something wrong, or will id not allow such editing via the Chrome browser on an Android device ?

Touchscreens aren't well supported by iD as of yet (for example https://github.com/openstreetmap/iD/issues/3994 )

There's Vespucci, a fuller featured Android app for editing OSM.

Thanks for the information, I have now installed Vespucci, zoomed to the relevant location and done the "download current view" which should allow me to edit, but when I click on the node or the way and the "unlock to edit" prompt comes up, the padlock only briefly flashes to white when I tap on it. How do you enable editing ?

On Android there is a lock icon in the upper left corner. Tapping on this icon enables/disables editing mode.

The lock icon at top left is a green circle with a red padlock. When tapped, it briefly changes to an open white padlock, then back to the closed red one.

Note: Mike has opened an issue on the Vespucci tracker for this, it may simply be a corrupted installation, but it needs to be investigated.
