Is there an approved tag for a small lay-by? These are just small areas next to a road, often the old road. The tag rest-area seems to big for these areas.

I tend to just map the smaller ones as amenity=parking, perhaps with other tags such as "surface=gravel" as appropriate.

Edit: clarified what I meant by "surface".

There is also parking=layby. So amenity=parking + parking=layby sounds good.

Yeah, that's the one I use (and it can be taken as read that it's a surface parking).

Do you draw a new line as highway=service road, only a line with amenity=parking, or just add amenity=parking to the section of road? Can you post a link to an example?

Here's one I did 5 hours ago: http://www.openstreetmap.org/node/4883663593 . There's no service road there because it's really just a patch of gravel at the side of the road. If there's something a bit more formal where there's a service road that moves away from the road I'd map that too.

Hi Amanning, no there not, just use the available tags, take a look here http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/File:Parking_and_picnic_area_at_Rest_And_Be_Thankful_-geograph.org.uk-_1657648.jpg and specify the items that are present.

There are some wonderful rest spots in mainland Europe often very large and well away from the traffic noise, some with outdoor gym kit, barbeques and toilets, i've even wild camped overnight in one once. but most lay-bys in the UK are just a piece of dedicated hard shoulder, not restful at all.

The link does not work!

I'm guessing that the link is supposed to be http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1657648 , which is http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=18/56.22568/-4.85615 in OSM. I wouldn't call it a layby to be honest - it's a parking and picnic area off the side of the road.
