I am a real novice regarding mapping but really appreciate having OSM as a resource for my hobby. My question is - Is there any way I can filter out place names from OSM? I trace over maps by hand to produce 'map art' but find that the place names obscure street level detail on maps that are zoomed out. It is then very difficult to insert accurate detail, and the only way I can figure to do this is to zoom in on a second device and then try and copy the detail by sight/hand on to the first map I've created. It's time consuming and not very accurate. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

At the extreme you could setup your own map rendering with only the elements you choose.

You might find a cleaner OpenStreetMap based style that preserves the details you want here: http://mapstyle.petschge.de/
