The best way you can help the progress of new features to software by sugesting how to and starting to implement it yourself. It is much easier for the developers to apply a patch then to start work from scratch.

There seems to be some sugestions for how the new rendering should look like. You can try to implement this in the standard mapnik stylesheet and submiting a patch and a sample rendering to the ticket.

I would definitely do that, but people responsible for Mapnik stylesheet (ldp and stevechilton) are not so active, they've stopped responding to my messages.
