Overlay, underlay wondering free!!

May sound obvious but what are overlays and underlays.....how do I use them?

Please explain the context of this question. Which web site, which software, which mobile app uses the terms "Overlay" and "Underlay" that you wonder about?

Quite likely, OsmAnd has overlay and underlay settings if the online maps plugin is activated.
