I am trying to find a way to use maps offline. I am not trying to edit or do GPS or use a PDA or smartphone. I have my laptop, and I am in a new city, and I want to be able to pull up street maps to help me navigate around the city. I won't have an internet connection is the issue. I found a place to download the data for this city, but I don't know of a program that can open it and use it the way I want to use it offline. |

You can try: NaviPOWM: offline Maps that are renderes by vectors Gosmore: very fast vector display, also search fution included MapFactor Navigator Free is a navigation solution with search function, running also on Windows or Linux (via Wine) GpsMid: also offline and vector map ... originally for JavaME devices, but you can run it with microemu on any desktop PC with Java (increase screen size of the emulated device!) ... new release with house number searching. gpsVP: also offline, for OSM maps or Garmin maps. Navit: also with navigation features, but but not so easy to configure due to the famous file navit.xml MoNav: still in early development, but very promising Also have a look at the OSM wiki for programs that store theit map data offline at Software When you have detailed questions about a programm or the map source for them, come to OSM forum. 1
I'll add my favorite: marble to that list, which is very multiplatform and is steadily improving its offline capabilities.

I thought I was ok with computers, but I haven't had much luck with any of this. Gosmore: I cannot get any maps to load. I followed the instructions on the Wiki. Typed in my city, then pressed 0, then clicked update map, and nothing happens. I also tried loading data by drag and dropping a osm.gz file then a osm.pfb file, and that didn't work either. NaviPOWM didn't open at all because I was missing a qtcore4.dll MapFactor actually worked ok, except when it opened a map, the streets didn't line up with the background image of land/water, so streets were extending over the Mississippi River.
