I am working on a school research project and was suggested to use OSM as a resource to find slums within Bangkok. I am very new to OSM and are unsure of how I can find areas within Bangkok that are considered slums. I mainly need the location/coordinates of the slums but polygons would be even better. If someone could point me in the right direction on where to start or what to read to help it would be much appreciated.

Slums aren't mapped as a category in OSM. But contrary to most other maps, we do map them just like any other neighborhood. So you might be able to find slums by comparing OSM to other maps and see where OSM has details and others don't. Check for example Koli Nangar in Mumbai or the Huanuco 'suburbs'.

I don't think you'll be able to identify "slums" from OSM data. At best, you might be able to identify residential areas by searching for objects tagged with landuse=residential, but that won't tell you anything about the availability of public services, quality of building construction, economic income, etc. in those areas. Such variables aren't typically added to OSM objects because they'd be inappropriate for this platform (ie. they're subjective, unverifiable, dynamic, etc.).

That was my first thought as well, but there seems to be 177 features tagged somehow as slum: http://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/search?q=slum

Those were all by one user who was adding drinking water locations, looks like they could've used a different place tag instead of slum=* ? Example node: https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/3235831819
