modifying iDeditor and hosting on github

Hello,

I would like to to do two things with iD:

1) change some of the defaults settings and options for filling out info (form on the left when you click an object)

2) host it on a github page.

I have cloned the repo and I am preparing to work on it. I have not found any guide to do this and after looking at the code, this will be far from easy. I can code javascript but this is a level above in complexity. Any insight welcome!
