Garmin devices tend to come with a manual (nowdays online), you need to have a look at that.

If to mean this one https://www.bikeadventures.co.uk/product/lejog-end-to-end-9-day-challenge-aug-2016/ You will need a routable OSM on Garmin download so you can see a map. On the garmins i have used waypoints can be entered and these can be used to create a route to follow. You will need waypoints outerwise the garmin will choose a route which may not be your prescribed route. I would have thought the oganisers will either give you a route, maybe for a garmin or a GPX file that could be used most garmins. A GPX file could be used and followed on most garmins even without a map. If your baggage is being moved along for you take a laptop, cables chargers memorys cards and you may be able to get some practicle GPS and mappping experience...by the end of the trip, enjoy. You may find other riders will be familar with what you need to know and will help you during rest times.
