Road Id's OSM for Qgis

I have downloaded SHP file data of OSM, from Geofabrik. This to be used as a network in Qgis(2.16.1)

I want to enrich this data with specific data needed for the company I work for.

Now the thing is: how are the road ID's generated? I want to link the enriched table to the road table, but what happens with the ID's after editing...

I dont think you can place any reliance on these ids (or other ids in an OSM context) to be persistent. Usuallly the best bet is to use some geofeature to match to an external data set.
