A few years back I put OSM maps on my 76 Cx and now want to update the map.

The gmapsupp.img file has to be a max of 2 GB the last time I did this. So the last time I did it I used Windows (I am now on Linux) and used MapSource to divide the OSM US map into three sections (East, Central, West) to get the US (with AK, HI, and a little of Canada) into three gmapsupp.img files that each met the 2GB max.

I had three folders on a 8 GB microSD in a SD card holder and just renamed the folder with the gmapsupp.img file I wanted to use from East, Central, or West to Garmin and then used the maps.

Now I'm on Linux (Mint 17.3) and don't have a MapSource install. Is there an app I can run on a laptop that will do all the things MapSource did for me before?

Thanks for any help or suggestions...

Jack

GPSMAP 76Cx, GPSMAP 76CSx, Zumo 500 (550?) and not getting any new ones anytime soon... Working on Mint Linux 17.3, can use Windows XP Pro if I have to...

Some options come to my mind:

  • Use a web service which allows you to download smaller gmapsupps. E.g. http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/
  • run MapSource via wine on Linux (I did not try this and do not know if it works)
  • more complicated stuff like creating your own Garmin maps from OSM data

Thanks for the help, so as far as you know if you want to browse the maps and create new map image files you need to have the MapSource app.

I've found a site that has the instructions on doing that so I guess that is what I will do.

Running Garmin Mapsource (6137) under Ubuntu with GPS access - https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1483930

Thanks again,

@jackerbes: what do you mean by "browse the maps"? You can open gmapsupp files also with QLandkarte (but only if you have a accompanying meta data file). Otherwise, it seems that there are no other applications to display Garmin map files, yes. I personally use no such software – only maps on my Garmin.

For how to make a map image file see https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM_Map_On_Garmin . Not really that easy.

Your link about running Mapsource via wine - like mine. Yes, that's an option.

However, I would like to emphasize that I suggest to use one of the many webservices which offer you small or even custom Garmin maps.
