How would you tag an US American deli. Obviously shop=deli does not apply because it is NOT a gourmet shop. But what would you use otherwise? leisure=restaurant or leisure=fast_food or shop=convenience ?

IIRC this was discussed briefly in one of the mailing lists: avoiding confusion was important for at least one NYC-based mapper! I personally use shop=delicatessen to avoid the potential confusion.

If it is a restaurant and offers a variety of dishes including a sitting area, then it can be tagged as amenity=restaurant, cuisine tags might probably added to describe what is sold there. If it is just a take out, then takeaway=yes/no can be mentioned with the restaurant or fast food. Depends on how the deli functions or what they sell. If it is just a shop selling meat then shop=convenience can work.
