Create map of Bike-Friendly Streets

0

Hello,

I'm wondering if I can use OpenStreetMap to create a map of bike-friendly roads near my house.

Essentially, the equivalent of printing out a giant paper map, grabbing a red, yellow, and green highlighter, and then highlighting each road on the map as follows

red: unfriendly to road bikes (high speed limit, narrow shoulder, or poor pavement) yellow: sort of friendly to road bikes green: super friendly to road bikes (low speed limit, wide shoulder, with great pavement)

Maybe create my own custom layer on Open Street maps ?

You can't create a custom layer on OpenStreetMap. However you can view a bicycle map on OpenCycleMap, but it does not highlight hills. You could download a map of your city with Mapzen and then use QGIS to create your own map how you like it. The data may not be extensive enough for your needs however.
