How would I map a gas line that is underground and will be visible without going into editor? I've already added the "man_made=pipeline" tag but it doesn't show up on the map.

Have you read the pipeline section in the wiki?

Something like this may be used for an underground gas line:

  • man_made=pipeline
  • location=underground
  • type=gas

Can you please post a link to the way describing the pipeline so we can take a look at it? (Or an object ID, coordinate or something that can make us find it.)

Just because something is entered in OpenStreetMap doesn't mean it will show up on every map made from OpenStreetMap. It's up to the map designer to choose what to render and not.

Even if some kind of data will be rendered on a specific kind of map i may take a while before it's actually rendered. It may take minutes, days, weeks, months etc.

By the way, when trying to find the pipeline i stumbled upon http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/changeset/7902323 which says "Reference Source: Google Maps". Google Maps is not a valid source for OSM mapping.

How does this fit with the "map only what is seen on the ground" way that is taught around here?

I don't believe that "man_made=pipeline" appears on either the Mapnik or Osmarender maps on the main OSM website, and rightly so - it wouldn't really make sense for an underground feature to be rendered by default there.

Someone, somewhere might have a "pipeline" map - if they have I'm sure that they'll reply to your question.

man_made=pipeline appears on osmarender

Interesting. Is there some kind of layer restriction?

There's a pipeline here; but it doesn't appear in osmarender: http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=53.12567&lon=-1.50013&zoom=15&layers=O&way=108162769

(maybe it's just waiting to be rendered?)

Yes, a rerender produces the expected faint dashed line.
