search GPS trace

Does anyone know if there is there a way to search the GPS traces for specific areas? Right now all I can find is a list of uploads in chronological order...

for a smaller area the JOSM way is easiest.

when editing in potlach2 when zoomed into the area of interest clicking on gps data will give a choice of gps data, my tracks or clear. gps data shows all the traces

You can search using tags, like this. It's not exactly what you're looking for, but it might help.

In JOSM you can download the points of GPS traces which lie inside your downloaded bounding box (you have to check "download GPS points" in the download dialog).

In the meantime there was also a release of all non-private GPS Points ever uploaded to Openstreetmap. For bigger areas it might be best to extract them from this file.

The program Viking can process GPS Traces too.

  1. Optionally add a map layer to see where you are
  2. Go to the area of interest
  3. Use the menu File->Acquire->OSM Traces
