There is an often-used cycle route in my area: it consists of two sections of public road (where cycling is allowed) joined by a pedestrian footbridge (which has a 'No Cycling' sign). Even if cyclists walk their bike across this bridge, the route is a good one which avoids a major road and roundabout. I have marked the bridge as 'cycling allowed' to enable routing engines to use it, although strictly it should be marked as 'cycling not allowed'. This may be a fairly common issue - comments please?

You could add the tag bicycle=dismount
Where cycling is not allowed on short sections of signposted cycleroutes (typically in the UK on narrow bridges and underpasses which are shared with pedestrians), there are usually signs saying "Cyclists dismount" (from OSM Bicycle Wiki )

Thanks, nevw. I have tried 'dismount' - will see if the cycling routing apps still use this bridge when they next update. If not I'll change it back!
