giving a numbered trace as an example

I can look at my uploaded traces and note it's number i can then give this number in these help files as an illustration of a problem or of relevance to a question or answer.How could they then retrieve it.

Do you mean one of your .gpx uploaded traces, like this one? If so you can probably just quote the URL which in this example was https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/EdLoach/traces/896103

I haven't tested whether the traces have to be public/identifiable/whatever for this to work; mine are all identifiable if it helps?

The traces need to be not private. If it helps, here's one that's "public":
