Having uploaded some nodes, all heliports, I wonder how much detail is recommended.

So far I have only used two tags, aeroway=heliport, and name=Hospital Name Heliport.

What other tags do experienced contributors recommend?

Everyone adding data to OSM is free to make up and use their own tags. Just be sure to use standard tags if they already exist, and discuss your own suggestions on the mailing lists and the wiki.

As to how much detail is required: it really depends on how much information you have available. In principle, the more the better, as long as this information is potentially useful to people. For the case of helipads: are there size/weight limitations for helicopters? Is it paved? I know nothing about helipads, so I'm sure you can think of more.

Just remember that as long as you map things as they are on the ground, you are always helping. It is better to add a little information than to refrain from contributing at all because you don't know every detail about an object.

Why was this voted down? It's a correct (though somewhat terse) answer.

Heliport is the correct Incident Command System term for a fixed helicopter landing area with paved surface, minimal aerial obstructions, ability to take off and land into prevailing winds, staffing (at least some of the time), fire fighting equipment, pedestian limitations, windsock, etc. A helispot (ICS term also)is a grass or other naturally surfaced landing area for helicopters that is used only part of the time and does not have all of the above amenities. A helipad is the surface on which a helicopter lands, and is not an ICS term
