I'm trying to add a marker for a local restaurant, La Trocha del Boyero, at 9°58'56.42"N 84°22'23.50"W (Google Earth Pro). Several times I have placed it here: But, when I save and go look at it, the marker shows up a block away as seen here: What am I doing wrong? asked 19 Jan '16, 18:09 rengewwj aseerel4c26 ♦ |
The map that you see may consist of old tiles, perhaps because they're cached in your browser or perhaps because they just haven't been updated yet. If you want to see the current location you can use the search box at the top left of the osm.org website. That will take you to http://www.openstreetmap.org/node/3955403166 and the current position will be highlighted. It does look like the underlying tiles have updated, as the "restaurant" marker (on the tile) matches the orange circle (from the latitude and longitude that you updated). As an aside, there are a couple of reasons why you mustn't use Google Earth to obtain location information to add to OSM. One is that Google's data is closed - your terms of service with Google prevents you from adding the data to services like OSM. Another reason is that the locations of things in Google mostly haven't been added by humans and in some cases are laughably incorrect (in England they seem often to be based on partial postcode lookups, which is not much use in a large postcode area). However the fact that your editing the restaurant in the first place presumably means that you have eaten there and no exactly where it is, and can move the location in OSM to it without using Google Earth? answered 19 Jan '16, 18:25 SomeoneElse ♦ |
I only used Google Earth to get those coordinates after the fact. To place the marker, I used both of the first two editor choices (at different times) and used both the OSM street position and the physical underlying image of the building of the restaurant, which is easily identifiable -- and the two "data sets" agree. Based on another similar problem mentioned in this help group, I also tried zooming in and out. Didn't help. However, by following your link, above, I now see an orange spot in the correct place, with the label the "block away" as shown in the above image. However, zooming out a certain way makes the label move over to the orange dot. Very strange. I guess this problem is kind of solved? answered 19 Jan '16, 18:49 rengewwj Yes, that's normal. There's a long and very detailed explanation here: http://help.openstreetmap.org/questions/178/how-often-does-the-main-mapnik-map-get-updated/183
