keep full history and apply changes

I've downloaded the planet.osm.pbf(full history) is there a way to apply osc files to it and retain full history? When I tried with osmconvert it scrapped all the history

IMHO you are using the wrong tool, you should be using http://osmcode.org/osmium/ to update (haven't tested it myself, but I have the information straight from the horses mouth).
