My question is if I record 10 shops in a strip mall using the Shop area, what is it that tells someone that they are all the same building. Should I put them inside a building polygon? How will it differ from adjoining buildings with shops in each one? Is it more accurate to use points?

You trace the outline of the entire mall building and tag it with shop=mall. Then you add nodes for individual shops inside the building's area, tagging them with shop=* (or whatever is appropriate). For an example, see the Eastgate Center in Tulsa, OK.

As was said in the answers to the previous question, this is the basic approach to mapping malls. If you have surveyed the mall in more detail you can add entrances to each of the shops (although given the topology of the typical mall, the location of the entrances is fairly obvious).

You draw a big buildings with many shop areas or points inside, right? So, what makes them inside? –

The fact that there is a single building around the locations' of the many shops (the spatial fact).
