If barrier=gate is applied to a node in a single navigable way, or a node that joins the ends of two navigable ways, it's simple enough to interpret.

But what does it mean if barrier=gate is applied to a T junction or crossroads?

For example: https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/1590988097 https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/1354048462 https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/25417796 https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/3161500758 https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/90386298

Edit: And if these are errors, what should I do with them? I've got 260 in the UK, but I gather creating notes automatically isn't cool.

Looking at your examples, I suspect it means they've been mapped in the wrong place. As you suggest it makes no sense to put a gate node at such a point - in each of your examples it should have probably been mapped as a short distance along the minor or private way at each junction, though it would need re-surveying to be sure of that.

Personally, I'd do the following:

  1. If it's somewhere local, I'd go and have a look to make sure.
  2. If not, and the edit is by a current OSM contributor, I'd introduce myself and politely explain (probably in a changeset comment) what the problem is, and what options may sense.
  3. If the edit's by a contributor who has long gone, but there are lots of local mappers, I'd probably contact one of them, or more likely just add a note that they will see.
  4. If none of the above apply, and the actual location is obvious, I'd just fix it, with a changeset comment explaining what's happened.

You could also create a map note (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Notes ) at those locations.

Indeed - that's in there "... or more likely just add a note that they will see.".

Oops - sorry! I must have missed that. :(
