Looks like a change to the style of the map that has affected a large area. Those patches are probably old tiles. It could be cached by your web browser, so clearing your cache can help. That typically happens when a large area has been changed from one landuse to another, and the tile servers struggle to catch up. In this case someone changed the university to be a building and then not a building again.
