A few months ago, Mapnik quit rendering closed ways with the tag military=barracks; as a result, many of the barracks I have mapped with only that tag are now "hidden".

I am tempted to add landuse=military and thus making them visible on the default map again, but I would like not to map for the renderer;

This is an example: it's a military area with restricted access, and, as far as I know, mainly used as a training and dormitory facility for troops.

So my question is: how are military barracks correctly tagged?

Thanks in advance!

The complete discussion on why the Mapnik team decided to stop rendering barracks. Please do not change the tagging because they decided to change the rendering rules.

@MarcoR - One thing that might help is if you can link to an example. I can imagine how people might tag such things slightly differently, so an example would help.

My understanding was always that landuse=military is the high-level tag and that military=* is a refinement to the base tag. This fits the classic "mainkey=value, value=refinement" scheme, the wiki, and this comment in the mapnik bugtracker.

So tag the area with landuse=millitary first, military=barracks second. If there's more than one purpose for the area (barracks and firing range for example), the military=* tag can be applied to smaller polygons inside the big landuse polygon. You might also want to tag individual building=bararcks inside the area.
