On a large number of small objects we can see replicated names, even almost overlapping. For illustration here is one example: http://osm.org/go/Z1N1MZvp?layers=C (Western/Eastern Lake in Canada) from area objects. Is this necessary or is this indicating something related to the source data?

The objects in question are from a broken import of canvec data. You should take this up with the original importer and responsible person for the bad data, it is clearly their job to fix the issue.
