I am hiking along the Via Algarviana in the Algarve and have now crossed three streams on a footpath. The tag "ford" implies an automobile and is rendered as such. So how should it be tagged? |

A ford is equally valid for foot, fording a river was in use long before cars were invented. Yes, I know that. However, the renderers show a car: That could encourage someone to try and cross the stream: We don't want that, do we?

DCP, if your worried about the innocent driver, you could add or better add mvh=no and 4wd_only=yes, problem solved !

@dcp I wouldn't worry about how one particular rendering shows a particular tag. That can easily be changed (if appropriate) later. Note that a "non-car" icon was discussed over on the "standard" style's github: https://github.com/gravitystorm/openstreetmap-carto/issues/118

I still think that something is lacking. Paths crossing streams are quite common and a clearly defined method would be IMHO better than a workaround. Thank you for your comments though: I'll just leave things as they are, i.e. path through water with ford=yes motor_vehicle=no. It will still be rendered wrongly though.

@dcp: yes, that icon is wrong. Please still add the data correctly (path and ford) and ask the relevant map creator to change the icon. It is not a problem of the data but only of the map rendering.

I did read the entry but it does not answer the question!
@dcp: see SomeoneElse's answer there ("The second issue").
Note that the recommended tagging is
ford=yes(nothighway=ford).ford=yesdoes not show a car icon with the default map style.
