Hi Can anyone help me to create a .ebmd format for my Medion GoPal S3867? It only seems to accaept that format and not the standard .osm.

I have asked an owner of a similar device for help here.

Is that possible at all? Are the map file (ebmd) format specifications available? In general: ask the manufacturer because they openly advertise the OSM-based map function.

I did a bit of searching for you:

On https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Medion I see no mention of OSM maps for those devices. However on https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/DE:Liste_der_Navigationsgeräte a similarly numbered device is listed as with "OSM option" (but not how and where).

It seems you can download OSM-based maps via the manufacturer's (medion) software, see https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Hardware_for_OSM-Routing and http://blog.openstreetmap.de/blog/2012/05/medion-s3857-update/

I have found http://www.gopal-navigator.de/downloads.php?do=cat&id=53 (disclaimer: I do not know this site) which claims to offer OSM map downloads for those devices.

Please, mention (in a "comment" or "answer") which method worked for you (for others with the same question).

Thank you for your feedback!
The trigger for me to dig into this is that I want to know if I can use the S3867 in China.

Manufacturer (Medion)
I contacted Medion in the Netherlands by mail with the question how I can activate a .OSM file.
The last reaction (after 5 mails) is: you can only use maps that are downloaded via the Medion GoPal site.
There is no map of China :(

GoPal-navigator.de
This is a great site. I did find .ebmd maps of China overthere. However, these maps are dated 2011, and when I look at openstreetmap.org there are many roads/paths/markings that are not in the 2011-map.

Indeed the advertising is "we use OpenStreetMaps", but I still don't kow how to use others than Medion's (like you also mentioned).
So my search still continues.......

@ReneGPS: great, thanks for sharing your further investigation.

Just as an example how it could be: We have many OSM-based maps and programs to make maps for Garmin devices (because someone has found out how the Garmin map format works, if I remember correctly not supplied openly by Garmin). It seems (FAQ of the previous software version which is linked from the current SW FAQ) the file format is not know / converter software is not available. So you need to reply on Medion-supplied OSM-based maps.
