Why do rivers and streams not show up in the Cycle Map? As a cycler and hiker, stream locations are very important.

I suspect there might be a word missing ("not" or "only" perhaps?), so can you link to an area where this is a problem so that people can see the effect?

just one random example: this waterway=stream. It is shown on the OpenCycleMap, but nearly invisible (looking like a contour line). I guess the question might be about this.

Yes, aseerel4c26, the rivers do show up, but I need the streams also. The maps mentioned by rprym show streams but do not have contour lines, only shaded relief. Is there any way around this problem?

@Doug Hull Can you please point to an area where you don't see streams on the cyclemap? They're not very prominent, but I see them from z15 when I look.

An example is here: http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=14/48.4468/-123.6709&layers=C. The rivers show on the Standard Layer, but not the Cycle Map Layer.

@Doug Hull: that is similar to my example: the "rivers" are mapped as "stream" (e.g. that one) and are shown by the CycleMap - but very thin. If you have a bad monitor/eyes you really may not see them at all.

I agree 100%. Water streams are (almost) invisible on OCM and for me this is its #1 weakness :(

Consider this part of my neighbourhood in different "flavours":
OCM Landscape Outdoors
OpenTopo
OSM

On All but OCM map streams are nicely visible!
Unfortuantely of all those, only OCM and OSM are READILY available (also in vector/low bandwidth format) in MOST cycling/hiking/tracking mobile apps and thus either have streams visible and no altitude contour lines OR vice versa.
I'd like both at once :/

yes, streams are rendered very thin (nearly invisible), which is not a good decision for a cycle map, in my opinion, too. Maybe it is an accident, maybe intentional. Ask the map creator Andy Allan (an contact alternative is osm.org's trac with the "opencyclemap" as "component" for the ticket).

and there it is now: https://trac.openstreetmap.org/ticket/5291 (@Doug Hull, please always mention such new locations here)

Hi. What area are you looking at? I can see rivers on the cycle map (e.g. here near Dublin). Remember there are many many different map styles, each tuned to show (or not show) particular features. On the openstreetmap.org website, only a select few are shown. But there are more.

For example:

The OpenStreeMap wiki lists several other hiking mapping options.

It all uses the same, underlying OSM database.

Thanks, rorym, but I need contour lines, not shaded relief. Do you know of any map that has both streams and contour lines?

@Doug Hull: try "Sigma Cycle" (e.g. at gpsies)

(09 Mar '15, 19:56) aseerel4c26 ♦

"Sigma Cycle" is great style, but is it available anywhere else except in GPSies? I couldn't find it...
OpenTopoMaps is also nice, but only works for me up to zoom 15...
