Does OpenStreetMap's search function understand road and rd are the same?

It should, go ahead and try. See this list of supported abbreviations.

Note that OSM data itself should be unabbreviated, as it is much easyer for computers to abbreviate than to (correctly) expand.

I can't try, as it doesn't find needed address. I committed my changes. Waiting their appearance to check my assumption.
