In the US, many people have addresses of the town whose post office corresponds with their zip code. Many people live in neighborhoods outside of the town, but have the same address and zip code as people in town do.

What I want to know is how I should tag a postcode boundary in the US. Should I give it a name tag with the name of the town? Should I give it a place tag? I know you are supposed to use boundary=postcode and postal_code, but I think something else should be added.

Please do not put this into OSM! USPS ZIP codes are not areas, they are routes. The ZCTA files from the Census are only approximations of ZIP codes.

What should be done instead?

you can tag individual addresses with their postal code. Nominatim (used for the search at OSM.org) does use zip codes as part of its search algorithm
