Do you know if it is possible to open an OSM file (that you have in your local file system) into iD?

No, it's not possible. iD was designed to be a browser-based, online editor for less complex uses (and users). As such, loading and saving data in files was not part of the original specification, and it hasn't been implemented.

(for the avoidance of doubt) note that you can open a local .GPX file though - just drag and drop it onto the editor.
