I wonder how I should map inhabited places like villages, towns and cities. The wiki description for place states: "The place tag is used on a single node to mark the centre of a named settlement as well as on the whole area to mark its extent."

Sometimes I found a node and an area tagged with place at the same time. Should I do both? Or if I should only do one of it, which method is to prefer?

In case I did both: shall I also duplicate all additional tags like population, wikipedia, names in different languages, etc.?

Don't put the both. Generally, I prefer put only the node, because draw a polygon that defines precisely the area is difficult.

Indeed, I think you can take a look at this answer

thank you Nicolas. I am aware of the general alternative node/way but I wondered if place would be somehow different from other POIs like shops or buildings.

Just do the best that you can in the time you have, but for the best I've seen look at Cambourne Cambridgeshire UK it is brilliant.
