Hi,

I am currently checking for integrating maps in our customers' web site for the following needs: Our device sends coordinates to the server. The customer can login and see his current location on the map.

The map is read only and can show the location of the device and the history route he did on the last day (using the coordinates we are collecting in our database).

My Questions are:

  1. Can we use OpenStreetMap free for this purpose ?
  2. I understood that we have to show openstreetmap link below the map. Anything else that we are committed if we are using it ?
  3. Any key that we shall get ?

Thanks

Completely separate from the legal issue, you may find some of the links from http://switch2osm.org/ useful.

have a look at http://osmo.mobi ... maybe it is similar to your aim?

You can always use OpenStreetMap data free of charge. The OpenStreetMap Foundation never charges for use of our data.

Your two obligations according to the Open Database Licence are:

  • Attribution - you must give credit. On a website, this is usually a link in the corner of the map.
  • Share-alike - if you improve OpenStreetMap's data, you must give permission to OpenStreetMap to use your improvements. But if you're just using OSM as a background map, this rarely arises.

You can read more at openstreetmap.org/copyright.

There are no API keys or other keys. However, please note that OpenStreetMap's own servers (those at openstreetmap.org) have strictly limited capacity, are run by volunteers, and are primarily provided for the use of those editing the map. Access to openstreetmap.org servers may be withdrawn at any point without notice.

If you anticipate heavy use, you must use an alternative supplier of OSM maps. Some of these are free, some are chargeable. Many are listed at switch2osm.org.
