In Potlatch2, a basic editing function was adding a point in an existing way:

To add a point to an existing way, select the way and shift+click at the desired location.

How do I do that in iD? Flash is not well supported on my platform.

iD has 'phantom nodes' between the actual nodes of each way. Select the way, and you'll see these appear (as arrows pointing in the direction of the way). Just drag this phantom node to your desired location and it magically becomes a real one.

If you want to create a new node as the start of a branching way, select the 'Line' mode and then click on the existing way at the place you want to start the new one.

One final option: select the way, double-click to add a node.

This alternative is not easier but follows this editor's logic:

You could

  1. use the point adding button in the top left,
  2. click somewhere (preferably near the way) to place it (do not change anything in the properties sidebar (left side))
  3. drag the new node onto the way (the mouse pointer changes has a line added and the way is highlighted if the node will be inserted into the way upon mouse button release).
