iD has 'phantom nodes' between the actual nodes of each way. Select the way, and you'll see these appear (as arrows pointing in the direction of the way). Just drag this phantom node to your desired location and it magically becomes a real one. If you want to create a new node as the start of a branching way, select the 'Line' mode and then click on the existing way at the place you want to start the new one. One final option: select the way, double-click to add a node. this is one feature of iD I really like
