Can anyone recommend a good POV camera for surveying? I've done some searching and so far the Sony HDR-AS100V/W POV Action cam sounds like the best option so I'm wondering if anyone has used it for collecting mapping data? If so how well did it work? If someone can recommend another camera or camcorder with a good GPS that works well for collecting mapping data that would be great! Thank you asked 30 Oct '14, 17:52 DTHG |
I use the Sony HDR AS15 (without GPS) on my bike which is a very good camera too, so the AS100 should be ok quality wise. I dont have experience with the GPS of that Sony. For more action cams reviews see http://www.techmoan.com/ answered 31 Oct '14, 09:03 ligfietser How clear is the video? For example if a buildings address is well labelled how closed to you need to be for it to show up clearly in the video? If you are walking around with the camera strapped to your head do people act like you're crazy?

I don't map housenumbers nor I strap it on my head but you can look at some samples at http://www.techmoan.com/blog/2014/4/13/the-epic-sony-as100v-action-camera-review.html and https://www.dropbox.com/sh/f9741rxzyicnh0y/zBoqrT9lyp (don't stream them, you should download the clips to see the actual quality)

Fairly old http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Video_Mapping_with_the_ContourGPS_Helmet_Camera the wiki further has a section on video mapping that is even older. Note that I would not recommend any specific current device. answered 31 Oct '14, 08:35 SimonPoole ♦ 1
Yeah I read both of those sections of the Wiki before posting in here. The ContourGPS isn't sold anymore and Contour went out of business for awhile and when they came back they released a camera that doesn't have a GPS in it and the older Controur+2 (which does has a GPS) doesn't have anyway to viewing the video while I'm recording it (no WiFi, bluetooth, or display) which is why I'm more interested in the Sony Action Cam.

Hi DTHG try Nexus 5 to record your POI for OSM, it looks accurate even in a city. answered 30 Oct '14, 22:44 Hendrikklaas 3
The Nexus 5 is a smartphone, not a camera or camcorder. I think DTHG is looking for a device that is primarily a camera but also has GPS track recording.
