Hi, I'm new to OSM. I am trying to edit. Have a couple of questions on visualization in the browser. In viewing mode (i.e. before clicking edit button), is it possible to show data overlaid on satellite? In editing mode, is it possible to hide the data and see only satellite? Sometimes the roads cover up too much of the satellite photo and I can't see what is underneath. Thanks! Greg |
No, at least not on the standard map shown on http://www.openstreetmap.org/ . If you implement your own map, you can do a lot more, of course.
As pointed out by SomeoneElse in a comment, there are two "editing modes" (editors) on the website: One using Javascript, and one using Flash. I assume you are talking about the Javascript-based one ("iD"). In iD, you can adjust the brightness of the background, to make it easier to see (Button "Background settings" in the bar on the right, then use the greyscale buttons on top). However, you cannot hide the OSM roads. There is an open feature request for this, https://github.com/openstreetmap/iD/issues/1299 . 1
Thank you Sleske. Very helpful. I did not see the feature in Potlach2, but I'm not sure I fully understood. Therefore I will keep trying. @aseerel4c26, Yes, I was trying to edit. That is why I wanted to go back and forth between the two views.

For info - there is a choice of 3 different editors. The default one is an in-browser one - either the Javascript-based "iD" (if you're not using IE as a browser) or the Adobe Flash-based "Potlatch 2" (if you are). There's also the separately downloadable Java-based JOSM.
@gregsharp: could you please tell us your intention/purpose? Do you want to contribute to OSM or do you just want to show whatever data (to yourself or to others)? Which data? That may help to know.
