See the OSM wiki about OSM-on-paper to get more options to produce bitmap graphics from OSM based maps.

Use Windows7 screen snipping tool, it can be used to draw a line or highlighted route at the same time. The area can be borderless and saved as a jpeg. This works for me when printing small areas or for later calibration to make a Garmin custom map of the Kmz type. here is a description of the MS snipping tool http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/products/features/snipping-tool

Apparently all the cool kids are using "share" as the name for "export" these days. :-)

The OSM website rewrite last year added a "share" link (which may do what you want) in addition to the more sensibly-named "export" one. It's the second unlabelled icon from the bottom at the right-hand-side.

That problem is described in detail here. For a relatively small area, would an edited screenshot of the browser window work? For example, if you're using Windows 7 - alt-printscreen, run MSPaint or similar, then shift-insert to paste. Crop and otherwise edit as required.
