The river names are positioned some times on the left bank, some times on the right bank, some times in the middle of the river (and some times outside the river). Is this necessary? For illustration look at this area: http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=14/47.1535/7.3859. Thanks.

It looks like there might be a problem with the data in that example. There's a river here, but this which looks like the riverbank is also tagged "waterway=river"

Yes, the riverbank is definitely tagged incorrectly, which is then causing the name to display where it shouldn't.

If this isn't just a data issue, it is probably an issue with the rendering at osm.org. In general, if you think you find an issue with that, you should check to see if there is an existing issue, and if not submit a new one, at https://github.com/gravitystorm/openstreetmap-carto/issues
