While editing, I have come across a great number of nodes that appear to be from the USGS Geonames database but don't appear to exist anymore- most of these are former schools. Should they be kept as points of reference, or should they be removed due to being outdated USGS 'artifacts'?

I think that the wiki page for GNIS has some guidance here: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/GNIS

Specifically "If you come across a feature that no longer exists in the real world, feel free to delete it."

On the mailing talk-us mail list I got the impression that if any ruins or old remains are physically still present then the tag might want to be kept. But if there is no trace of the named items, feel free to remove the node.

In addition to the info & suggestions on that wiki page, I'd add that some features may not have the most accurate geolocation. Also, some populated places that were imported probably should not have been imported that way as they are features like mobile home parks, housing developments, or names of platted areas that should probably be tagged differently.
